Smart Paste can be used to convert copied objects such as sheet entries on a schematic and paste them down as net labels wire and ports or expand a bus signal into a series of wires and net labels.

For example, if we copy a bus port called D[0..7] by selecting it with the left mouse button click and use the command Edit » Copy and select a reference point on the port if requested on the status bar.

Now use the command Edit » Smart Paste to open the Smart Paste dialog box.  As you can see here it is showing our coped port in the Choose the objects to paste section.  In this section, below the Schematic Object Type, we also have a Windows Clipboard Contents box.  This option allows you to paste any of the schematic objects you have copied down as a resizable graphical image.

Looking to the middle of the dialog box we have a Choose Paste Action section, this section allows us to convert our copied objects into different objects.

We wish to convert our port into separate Net Labels and Wires, expand the bus signal names and have a wire length of 30, as shown below.

Paste the wire/net label group down, in my example I already have a bus and bus entries placed so I will join up to them.  The objects will be pasted using your schematic grid.

Note that in my example the length of 30 was not quite enough for my wires to reach the pins, so, using another useful feature I can select all of the wires and drag one wire end to connect to the pin, all of the other selected wires extend to match.

For more information and to see the tool in action check out the movie on the Altium website Smart Paste
