The Sea Mammal Research Unit

The unit for the Sea Mammal Research Instrumentation Group is based at the University of St Andrews. The group designs and manufactures a wide range of data collection and relay systems to track and monitor the behaviour of marine mammals in support of various research projects. These electronic animal ‘tags’ can also relay environmental oceanographic data ashore.

The picture shows a SMRU GPS/GSM tag glued to the fur of a UK harbour seal. The tag phones detailed behavioural data ashore via the GSM mobile phone system and provides an unparalleled insight into the underwater world of seals. Altium provide the software we need to efficiently design and layout the printed circuit boards used in the construction of these tags.
